Never Heard of It: Critical darling Atlanta is on FX, so those that either don’t have cable or don’t have the corresponding streaming service may not have even heard of it! It follows a young man as he tries to be the manager of his cousin, a rapper, in search of money to support his baby and baby-mama. And he’s essentially homeless. Doesn’t sound much like a comedy….
Glover Lover: Donald Glover, Community alum, stars, created, and directs many episodes of this comedy. He is a very likable actor, the kind of guy that’s just chill. He comes off as an eat-Doritos-and-binge-watch-Stranger-Things kind of guy. No matter what craziness is happening he’s never over the top, but just alarmed enough to be believable.
Where’s Danny Pudi?: No cameo. Sad. Peanut butter and jelly have made a complete split.
Montague: B.A.N. is my favorite episode, and Glover isn’t even in it! Paper Boi, rapper cousin, goes on a talk show. He is blindsided by the subject matter and does his best to get out with his dignity intact. However, my favorite part, other than the Saturday Night Live-esque commercials, was Antoine, a black teenager that believes he’s really a 35 year-old white man named Harrison. He should have his own show.
Real Life?: Even though I am not a black man from Atlanta, this show seemed plausible. The humor comes not from totally outrageous situations, but from dealing with odd personalities that ring true.
Second Favorite: Streets on Lock. Could have been boring, but was in turns scary, unbelievable, and hilarious. Trust me. It’s awesome. You should watch it.
Not Your Thing?: It wasn’t mine, either, but I liked it a lot. If you’re thinking this is like Entourage or something, rest assured that it is not. It’s 10 short episodes, so give it a chance!
